About this list: These are the HSK 3.0 · Level 6 (六级) vocabulary and grammar points, based on the official HSK 3.0 syllabus. HSK 3.0 restructured Chinese proficiency into three tiers — Elementary (1–3), Intermediate (4–6), and Advanced (7–9) — so this Level 6 list sits at the top of the Intermediate tier.
Official exam format (HSK Level 6): 101 questions total across Listening, Reading, and Writing, run in one sitting of about 135–140 minutes (including 5 minutes to fill in personal information). The score report gives four scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Total — out of a maximum of 300 points, valid for two years from the test date.
Note: HSK doesn't have one official universal "pass mark" — requirements depend on what the score is being used for (e.g. university admission). Many learners and schools use roughly 60% (about 180/300) as an informal benchmark for a solid pass.

Tips & Tricks by Section

Strategy notes for every part of the HSK 6 exam — Listening, Reading, and Writing.

General mindset: HSK 6 rewards speed and pattern-recognition over perfect comprehension. You rarely need to understand 100% of a passage — you need to extract enough to eliminate 3 wrong answers. Practice skimming for structure (who/what/when/contrast/conclusion) before reading for detail.

🎧 Listening (听力)

第一部分 · Part 1 — Short statement/news clip → best-matching option
TIP 1
Read all 4 options before playing
  • You get a few seconds beforehand — scan A/B/C/D so you know what to listen for.
  • Options are often close paraphrases; underline the word that differs between them.
TIP 2
Listen for the overall gist, not every word
  • The clip is a short news-style statement — the correct option usually paraphrases the main point, not a minor detail.
  • Beware options that repeat exact words from the audio but twist the meaning (a classic trap).
TIP 3
Eliminate absolute-sounding options
  • Options with 一定/从不/所有人都 that aren't clearly stated in the audio are often wrong.
  • If unsure, guess and move on immediately — there's no time to dwell.
第二部分 · Part 2 — Interviews/dialogues (single or paired questions)
TIP 1
Track who is speaking
  • Many questions ask about 男的/女的 specifically — note which speaker said which fact as you listen.
  • Interviews (with a host and a guest) often test what the guest achieved/believes, not the host's questions.
TIP 2
Pre-read both questions if paired
  • When 2 questions share one audio clip, skim both question stems (not just options) first so you know two things to listen for simultaneously.
TIP 3
Answers often come in order
  • For paired questions, the answer to the first question usually appears earlier in the audio than the answer to the second — use this to pace your attention.
TIP 4
Watch for reversal words
  • 但是/不过/其实/没想到 often flag that the real answer follows, overriding what was just said.
第三部分 · Part 3 — Longer narratives/short lectures (3–4 questions each)
TIP 1
Use the story arc
  • These passages usually follow: setup → problem/turning point → resolution → lesson/moral. Map questions to this arc as you listen (e.g. "what changed?" = the turning point).
TIP 2
The last question is often the "big idea"
  • Final questions frequently ask for the moral, theme, or best title — save mental bandwidth for the ending, since idioms/morals often appear in the last sentence.
TIP 3
Numbers and names are bait
  • Specific numbers, dates, or proper nouns are usually there to test one detail question — jot them down quickly in the margin as you hear them.

📖 Reading (阅读)

第一部分 · Part 1 — Cloze: choose the correct word for each blank
TIP 1
Check word class first
  • Look at what comes right before/after the blank (a noun needing an adjective, a subject needing a verb) to eliminate options of the wrong part of speech instantly.
TIP 2
Near-synonyms are the real test
  • Options are usually 4 similar-meaning words (e.g. 启示 vs 启发 vs 提示) — the difference is usually collocation, not meaning. Learn fixed pairings (启发 + 灵感/兴趣; 启示 + 道理/意义).
TIP 3
Solve easy blanks first
  • Do the blanks you're sure of first; often one confirmed word rules out an option elsewhere in the same 4-blank set (since each option is used once).
第二部分 · Part 2 — Insert the missing sentence into the passage
TIP 1
Match pronouns and connectors
  • Look for 这/那/它/其 in the missing sentence or the surrounding text — these must refer back to something specific just mentioned.
TIP 2
Match sentence-pair connectors
  • If a missing option starts with 而/但/因此/于是, it must follow logically from the sentence right before the blank — check for cause–effect or contrast fit.
TIP 3
Read past the blank too
  • The sentence after the gap often depends on the missing sentence (e.g. it elaborates on a claim the missing sentence introduces) — don't only look backward.
第三部分 · Part 3 — Long passage comprehension (multiple questions)
TIP 1
Read questions before the passage
  • Skim the 3–4 question stems first so you know what to hunt for, then read the passage once, locating answers as you go rather than re-reading from scratch per question.
TIP 2
Questions follow paragraph order
  • Except for the final "main idea/best title" question, answers usually appear in the same order as the questions — use this to narrow where to search.
TIP 3
Beware of over-specific wrong options
  • Wrong options often add a detail the passage never states (a number, a cause) or reverse a fact (says the opposite happened). Verify each option against the actual sentence, not your memory of the gist.
TIP 4
"Which is correct?" questions = process of elimination
  • For "根据上文,下列哪项正确" questions, treat it as spot-the-lie: 3 options will each contradict one line of the text; find those lines rather than trying to prove the right one directly.

✏️ Writing (写作)

第一部分 · Part 1 — Practical writing (e.g. notice, listing/announcement, 150+ words)
TIP 1
Use the genre's fixed format
  • A 招租/通知/启事 has expected slots: title, greeting/context, key details (who/what/when/where/how to contact), closing. Memorize one template per genre so you're filling in blanks, not composing from scratch.
TIP 2
Front-load the essential facts
  • Graders scan for concrete, relevant information (price, requirements, contact info) — state these clearly and early rather than burying them in flowery language.
TIP 3
Hit the word count, don't pad
  • Add one or two extra genuine details (e.g. "近地铁站" for a rental ad) to comfortably clear 150 characters instead of repeating the same idea in different words.
第二部分 · Part 2 — Opinion essay (300+ words)
TIP 1
Use a 3-part skeleton
  • 引言 (restate/rephrase the prompt + state your position) → 论证 (2–3 reasons, each with a brief example) → 结论 (restate position, add a forward-looking or advisory line).
TIP 2
Bank transition phrases in advance
  • 首先/其次/再者/与此同时/综上所述/由此可见 make your essay feel structured even if the content is simple — memorize a stock set and reuse them every time.
TIP 3
One clear stance, not a fence-sit
  • HSK 6 graders reward a decisive position defended with reasons over a wishy-washy "both sides have merit" essay with no real argument.
TIP 4
Reuse HSK6 vocab/grammar deliberately
  • Work in 2–3 higher-level words or grammar points from your list (e.g. 与其…不如, 不仅…而且, 之所以…是因为) — graders notice range, not just correctness.
